At the time I got sober, I'd been driving for about thirteen years. I was in Manhattan one December night in 1988, and I had two minor accidents. After the second one, I didn't want to get back in the truck because I had a bad feeling that a third accident was coming, and this one would be really bad. So I called my boss and told him that I felt sick and that he should send somebody to come and get the truck. I said that I'd take a train home. My boss said I should just drive the truck back and be careful, but I refused. I was already pretty drunk.
