A "society of alcoholics in action" are the words Bill W. uses to define AA's third legacy of service. That same phrase aptly describes the Fifty-Second General Service Conference, which met in New York during the final week of April. Since 1950, representatives of AA in the U.S. and Canada and its three service corporations--the General Service Board, AA World Services, and the AA Grapevine--have met for a week of in-depth discussion of how to carry the message to the changing world and, at the same time, preserve the timeless legacies of recovery and unity as expressed in the Twelve Steps and Traditions. This year, the Concepts for World Service, which embody the administrative, legal, and spiritual principles for Conference interaction, were also highlighted.
