My Dream Trip

A teenager's first brush with AA and Bill W.

When I was about eighteen years old, I decided I could put off my education for a while so that I could earn some money to travel around Europe. I had graduated from high school earlier than most people do, at seventeen, and had given college one whole big year of my life. So I sent my college a letter requesting a leave of absence (with every intention of returning after a year's time), and off I went to an employment agency. Someone there asked if I would be interested in going for an interview to do secretarial work at a place called AA World Services. Well, was I excited. "Yes, a travel agency," I thought to myself. "Now I'll get to Europe quicker with insider tips and maybe even free travel."
