Escape From a Dark Cellar
Born in 1942, I was barely out of the toddler stage when Allied bombers darkened the sky over my hometown near Stuttgart, Germany. We fled to our large cellar, where my mother comforted me and my twin sister Traude as we huddled in the darkness with my three older brothers, waiting for the bombing to cease. In those terrible days, the cellar and my mother's protecting arms brought a measure of security.
