Balancing Act

My spiritual awakening came on the evening of the first day I went to AA. It was blindingly powerful and has changed my life, but it didn't happen because of anything I did--other than giving up the fight. My sobriety has been a gift. I'm not sober because I've earned it or deserved it or because I'm a great guy, or because I work some kind of great AA program, or because I have "done" the Twelve Steps. It is entirely nonvolitional. I don't do it--I have simply received it. In fact, it was because of this experience (and simultaneous with it) that I "came to believe."
