Winning Friends

When I got sober, I liked the fellowship of AA--the social interaction that happened naturally when I saw the same people every week at a meeting. But I was still solitary. While I was close to my sponsor, it was mostly based on AA, working the Steps, and making the occasional Twelfth Step call. My old ideas, my old perspectives, my defense mechanisms, my lack of trust led me to be alone most of the time. I included others only to the extent that I had to in order to get by.
