Research committee

When I came to AA in 1963, I heard the word "slip" frequently, and still do today. Returning to AA, members expressed gratitude for having had a slip because they learned something from it: that they were really alcoholics. I began to feel that if I wanted to learn anything, I should probably have a slip, too. At this point, my sponsor said he thought that there were two types of people in AA--those who joined the "research committee" and were frequently out and in the program, and those who stayed sober because they listened to the researchers' tales of woe upon their return.
