North to Alaska

After my first year of sobriety in AA, learning what to do for fun was no problem. I didn't really understand what it meant to stay away from people, places, and things until I asked. My counselor said, "Whatever you were doing before, do not do now." So I started going for walks in parks and camping throughout British Columbia. Then one day in a mall, I saw an advertisement for the airfare to Alaska for $199.00 round-trip, and right away I started hearing the song from my childhood--"North to Alaska." I asked a few close friends and my sponsor for direction, and all pointed to this lifetime dream. See, my dad had taken all eight of us children to see North to Alaska, and it was the first movie I ever saw. All my drinking days, I talked about going to Alaska, but I never did make it a priority over drinking.
