AA was established in Winnipeg on November 26, 1944. By 1953, there were four groups, with only a few women members in each. When one of these women, Isobel G., mentioned to her psychiatrist that she would like to be in a women's group, he put her in touch with Therese C. from the Assiniboine Group, and they and ten other women came together to discuss the possibility of forming a women's group. These founding members felt that such a group might meet the needs of women who were sensitive about special issues, including personal anonymity, and The Winnipeg Women's Group was born.
