A Rocker Takes AA to Work

I got sober on August 7, 1992. I started drinking when I was twelve and got sober at thirty-two. During my twenty years of drinking, I was expelled from junior high school, and dropped out of high school. I had lots of different jobs in gas stations on almost every corner, restaurants and bars, in cleaners and in construction; and I did almost everything from refinishing hardwood floors to roller skating in a toy warehouse. Some lasted a few days, some a couple of years. My drinking always got in the way. I would either quit in anger on the spot, or I'd get fired because I would leave for the day as a result of not getting what I thought I deserved.
