Reflections on what makes the Big Book truly big

Sober for the first time in years, I fell in love with the program and the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous as surely and completely as one falls in love with another human being. Despite the suggestion of placing principles ahead of personalities, it was the personalities of those who had practiced AA's principles that attracted me. I certainly didn't come back to those early meetings hoping to be near the principles. I wanted to be in meetings to be among those marvelous people who accepted me so graciously. AA was the first place in my adult life where I'd felt comfortable without liquor. Strangely, I couldn't claim as much for my own home, even though that's where I sought comfort the most.
