What I Learned From My Sponsor

I will never forget what my sponsor, Mark, told me the first time that we sat down to do the Steps. He told me the story of Bill W. and Dr. Bob and their first meeting. He also told me that he was taking me through the Steps in order to stay sober himself. Then he told me something that really blew my mind. He told me that someday I, too, would take other people through the Steps if I wanted to stay sober myself. With only a couple of days sober, all I could hope was that I wouldn't drink that night after I left our meeting. Carrying the message never entered my mind. I just didn't want to drink.
