I sobered up in September 1988, but Steps Eight and Nine were not on my itinerary for many years. I was a "happy-go-lucky" drunk most of the time. My misery surfaced only after I tried to control my drinking. I did apologize to my wife every time I came out of detox, though. In Madras, India, detox was expensive. The money spent on detox for three days could have kept me gloriously drunk for one month. I felt this was the only thing that hurt my wife. The money I spent on myself could have been put to better use.
