The Journey to Kazakhstan

The story of how the Fellowship got started in the Eurasian steppe

A missionary organization called me, wanting my help. "Yes, we know you aren't the missionary type, but we need someone who knows something about alcoholism." As a sober member of AA and a professional in the treatment field, this was an area where I might be of service. I sat at lunch and heard their story of mission work in the former Soviet satellite country of Kazakhstan. A poor and struggling nation in Central Asia, Kazakhstan had many woes--one of which was a huge problem of alcoholism and drug addiction. A Catholic priest had helped start a small AA meeting in the city of Karaganda, but it was struggling with many slippers. Would I consider going to this remote place to carry the message?
