Should Daddy Drink?

A two-year-old delivers the message to a reluctant drunk

After I'd been sober about five months in AA, I began wondering whether or not I still needed to go to meetings, because, you see, I was well already. Then one night, when my wife and I were fixing the kids' supper before going out to dinner with our AA group, Karen, our two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, asked, "Daddy, how come you are all dressed up?" I told her about our plans for the evening. Another seemingly simple question followed: "Daddy, are you going to drink beer?" "No," I replied. "Do you think Daddy should drink beer?" She pushed herself back from the table, crossed her arms, clamped her eyes shut, and, with her whole body trembling, shook her head back and forth--No, no, no!
