Grace and dignity

Bill M.'s "Living Sober, Dying Sober" in the September 2004 issue was inspiring and thought-provoking, especially in light of where I'm at in this journey of life. Soon I'll be 81. I was 47 when the plug went in the jug. Bill M. described medical problems as being hit with "whammies." I can really relate. During the past twelve years I've had some major stuff--heart bypass surgery, cancer, an aneurysm, cataract surgery and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease which requires oxygen therapy. In spite of all the "whammies," I still attend my home group meeting every Monday night. I play golf if the weather isn't too hot or humid, and I walk the aisles of the local "super center" on a regular basis. Of course, I'm not planning on dying anytime soon--only the good Lord knows the ending. But, as you may have guessed, I don't buy green bananas anymore, either!
