Amazing Grace" (August 2004) was another controversial and thought-provoking article and it came up in our Grapevine Discussion Group, which meets every Saturday. It was noted that the author stated that her "own father chose the bottle" over her. She also states that her father died of cirrhosis at age fifty-one. This would suggest that her father was alcoholic. If that were the case, I would suggest that her father no more chose to be an alcoholic than he chose the bottle over her. In my own powerlessness, I did not choose the bottle over a wife and two children, alcoholism made that decision for me.
