The word took on a whole new meaning in AA

In February 1963, handcuffed and shackled between two other felons, I was escorted into prison by deputy sheriffs quite familiar with my history over the previous decade. They were probably relieved to present me and my commitment papers to the captain on duty, which was their assurance that I would no longer be a threat to the community.
