What if the Lord's Prayer were anonymous?

In my thirty-plus years in the AA program, there seems to have been more "discussion" about the Lord's Prayer in the last few years than ever before. I feel rather strongly about the issue because this prayer has been an accepted part of the program since I came in, but it seems to be challenged more now. To me, it feels almost as if someone wanted to remove one of the Steps. So here's what I propose. What if we could all just forget about where the prayer came from for a few minutes and ask how it relates to the principles we learn about in the AA program? Doesn't the prayer encompass several of the same principles and teachings? By dwelling on its Christian link, isn't it as if we're putting personalities before principles? We're overlooking the beauty of its truths and its relevance to our principles because of where it came from. And isn't it a miracle that so many of us alcoholics have enough concern and interest to express our thoughts and opinions on something like this?
