AA Grapevine Readers Respond to "Is AA Just for Christians?" Published in the October 2003 Issue

The source of help

It is a grave mistake to eliminate the Lord's Prayer from AA meetings. Tradition Ten states that AA will not involve itself in outside issues. The Lord's Prayer has been inside AA from its inception. It and much of the rest of the program came from Christianity; one need only consult AA Comes of Age to see this. Individuals can choose not to participate, but if we throw out the prayer and other aspects coming from Christianity, we throw out the program. Are we willing to destroy the Fellowship by eliminating what works? We must not forget that Dr. Bob's legacy to the Akron Group was not a Big Book; it was a Bible. He was telling us not to louse this up by eliminating contact with the source of our help.
