Restored to Reality

When drinking, his life was a nightmare. When he got sober, it was real.

I grew up in the middle of Greenwich Village in New York City, son of a university professor and a psychoanalyst, both from England, and both drinkers and party-goers. I knew how to laugh from the bottom of my toes as a kid. I was smart and good looking, but had the normal fights in the schoolyard protecting my two sisters, and making a name for myself in the neighborhood.
