In open AA meetings where I live, the chair reads the part of the Big Book where the Twelve Steps are outlined. One night, anxious to get to the "meat" of the meeting (drunks sharing with drunks), I cut short the "ceremonial part" by suggesting attendees read the Twelve Steps on the wall. After the meeting, an old-timer came up to me and said, "They'd never tell you this, but at least three people here tonight are illiterate."
