Hungry for More

A dry-drunk works up an appetite for AA

My first AA meeting wasn't a meeting at all. It was just six committee members, a chairperson, and co-chairperson asking me questions from a questionnaire. The reason for this interview was to see if I was an alcoholic. If I was, then I would be allowed into our prison's 24-Hour Group. I answered yes sixteen times to the twenty-four questions and was given a membership card. The group was only allowed to have fifty members. With this card I could get out of my cell on Saturday morning and go to an AA meeting. There were a few other perks, but I only wanted the meetings. I am very proud of that card and still have it. I'm wondering how many of these cards exist today and how many members are still sober today. I know very few of us ever come back, but a lot of us do write back just to say how well we're doing because of the AA program.
