Exciting sobriety

After ten years of sobriety, I found myself a patient on the behavioral health unit of the local hospital. Just a few days prior, I had experienced flashbacks to a childhood trauma. Back when I was drinking, this was an every day occurrence. But to be sober? Thank God, I had the presence of mind to call my doctor and tell on myself. I was confused and suicidal when a friend brought me to the emergency room. A nurse I knew in my drinking days asked if I had "fallen off the wagon." Repulsed by the idea and offended that she would ask, I snapped "No way!" The nurse let out a delightful laugh and exclaimed, "Oh, that's exciting!"
