Thanks for the December issue on sponsorship. After a nineteen-and-a half-year drinking career ended in an attempted suicide, I was being rendered sober at a locked-ward treatment program. After three weeks, an acquaintance of mine, with whom I'd drunk as we played bridge, came to visit. I explained that it was "all right to not drink; after all B----B. hadn't taken a drink in over three years." "I know," my friend replied. "He's my sponsor." Well, you could have knocked me over with a feather! It turned out he had been sober for sixteen months.
