Two Voices: One Story the Dad

When shared genes lead to shared recovery

I didn't come from a dysfunctional family; I just created one, as the evidence of a son, a daughter, a wife, and an ex-wife, all in the program, will attest. (Just off to the side there are daughter-, sister-, and brother-in-laws in AA also.) My son Colin was first in after me. He was, at fifteen, my last drinking companion, for two reasons: nobody else would drink with me anymore and I was the one who had the money. He was with me on my last bout and after, getting his bleeding, drunken father into the hospital twenty-six years ago (January 1979). He returned to my apartment to throw all the booze there down the incinerator, while vowing never to become a drunk like me. Then he retired to a neighborhood bar to confirm that resolution.
