The Hole in the Soul
For thirteen years of my alcoholism, my wife's faith made it possible for her to endure the tornado. Still, she occasionally laments that she has never had the "burning bush" experience some AAs mention. Early on in my alcoholism career, I was a college student foundering about in Prescott, Arizona. While the early signs of booze addiction were popping up all around, it had not yet become the obsession that it later did. And I was a self-proclaimed atheist. As Bill W. put it, I believed that mankind "crawled out of the primordial ooze" and self-determination and propulsion alone were necessary to "get ahead."
