I just read the special section, Getting Sober Over Sixty (February, 2005 Grapevine). I can't begin to tell you how meaningful it was to me. I got sober at the age of sixty-one and I now have five years of sobriety. I, too, felt uncomfortable at first because of my age. I could not identify with others at meetings and I had a bad case of "They don't understand me." But because I wanted sobriety so badly, I kept coming back. People were patient, and slowly but surely I began to get a peace and a serenity I never dreamed could be a part of my life. I am now sixty-six and my husband of forty-six years and I are raising our grandchild. He is fourteen years old, and it is because of him that I got sober. His mother went to jail so we became his guardians. I was drinking daily to numb myself, and one day I realized I had to stop drinking to be a good role model for my grandson. I had tried to quit before, but this time I knew that I needed help, and so I went to my first AA meeting. That truly was the first day of the rest of my life. We are never too old to learn, and I continue to learn at every AA meeting I attend.
