Profound change
I was a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl in 1938, when Hitler marched into Vienna, Austria. The year that followed was one of torture, hunger, and fear. My connection to God kept me going. I thought, There are bad humans all around, but God lives inside me, and nothing can harm me there. This was my child-like philosophy: God gave us free will, and some will use it to do evil, while others will be a blessing to the world.
