First he got sober; then he grew up

I had my first really bad hangover when I was just seventeen years old. I wasn't an alcoholic at seventeen. But I had a damn good toehold on it. Like most boy kids, I thought booze would help me become a real man. I desperately needed and longed for this validation. I couldn't imagine a rejection worse than not becoming "a real man."
