No Barriers

A member welcomes a deaf alcoholic without sign language

I recently went on a Twelfth Step call that reinforced that we truly do speak the language of the heart. I got a call from a woman who asked if I could help her daughter. The daughter had left her two children with her sister and had come back home to try to sober up. I said I would love to talk to her daughter, just put her on the phone. Not possible she said, R. is deaf, doesn't-want to go to meetings, but needs somebody and Mom can't help. They had called Drug and Alcohol services and were told they couldn't help because of the communication barrier.
