I didn't come from a hugging family--according to my Finnish mother, "Finns don't hug." Upon joining AA, I was uncomfortable receiving embraces. While I enjoyed it, I was physically stiff in my responses. But this changed over time. Before long, I was hugging with the best of them. Eventually, it became a natural response.
