A false alarm brought real help

It all started somewhere in the middle 1950s in a small town in southern New Hampshire: population 4,500. Everyone pretty much knew everyone else's business. If things were not right, people might be concerned, but would look the other way. "What goes on in this house, stays in this house," was the operative saying around town.
