A dozen years of descent into alcoholism brought me to AA at age thirty-two. I was so desperate never to be compelled to drink again that I'd survived three years of Third Step struggle before caving in to a Greater Power. It was time to do the Fourth and Fifth, the elder statesmen said, or I would surely have to drink again.
