An AA learns that there is more to sobriety than a dry spell

I grew up on the darker side of humanity. By the time I was five, I had been starved, beaten, raped, kidnapped, and sold. By age ten, I was a psychological mess. That's when I took my first drink: a sip of whiskey I'd found in the pantry. The tension in my small body melted away. Fear left me and I was safe to just be. The next day, it was me and a buddy and a bottle down by the railroad tracks--I was the real deal from the word "go."
