Laying a foundation

When my ex-wife requested a divorce in 1997 after an eighteen-year marriage, I was only a year-and-a-half sober, and many of my AA friends thought I would be hard pressed to maintain my sobriety in the face of such a difficult transition. But the foundation I had laid--going to meetings and being of service, getting and using a couple of wonderful sponsors, and working the Steps to the best of my ability--was strong enough to see me through some very tough times, as I continued to work the program one day at a time. By the grace of God, I celebrated eleven years of sobriety last October. Reading others' stories of how they were able to rise above their own personal crises in sobriety reminds me of where I've been, and inspires me for whatever the future may bring.
