A ray of hope

In a March 2008 letter, "We think not," a member wrote that he thought the reading of the Promises at meetings was misleading to newcomers because there was no reference to the previous pages of Chapter Six in the Big Book. He felt that they might misconstrue the Promises as a "given." The first sentence of the Promises reads: "If we are painstaking about this phase of our development. . ." The word "painstaking" means that one has to give his all in the working of Step Nine. The last sentence reads: "They will always materialize if we work for them." This definitely points out that the Promises are not a given.
