Alcoholism damages perception of facial expressions

Alcoholism damages the brain in many different ways, including contributing to difficulties in accurate perception of emotional expressions. Findings from a 2009 study using functional magnetic resonance imaging suggest that diminished activity of the amygdala and hippocampus regions of the brain underlie emotional impairments in abstinent long-term alcoholics.
