My Place of Hope

Near a favorite childhood refuge, a woman surrenders her will

I'd like to share my Third Step experience. I'm 47 years old and I'm seven months sober. I was raised in a labor camp, a place migrant farm workers live, surrounded by fields and about five miles from the town of Caldwell, Idaho. I drank my first three beers there when I was 14. By the time I was 15 or 16, I was drinking and driving until the wee hours of the morning with friends. I wanted to die, but I didn't. I quit high school, like most Hispanics I knew did at the time. But my family said I had to do "something," so I got my G.E.D. and went to college.
