Taking initiative
Desperate and despairing, locked in a facility that hadn't had any meetings in over 10 years, I decided to take it one day at a time, until one day I wrote a grievance to try to get AA into the facility. The response I received was that there were no volunteers from AA. Not giving up, I contacted my AA correspondent, Ken C. from Tucson, Ariz., who made a lot of phone calls to different groups from within the area. Together Ken C. and I were able to contact a fellow AA member by the name of Don B., who volunteered to come to our facility and begin meetings there on a regular basis. Every Thursday evening there are now AA meetings, and many prisoners attend. It was a long, hard, slow process, but we did it, and I am proud to be one of the co-founders.
