A young "old-timer" discovers how fragile sobriety can be

ONE morning, shortly before my 21st anniversary in AA, I sat eating my breakfast, pleased that I did not have a headache, even though I had eaten some sweets the night before (sugar usually gives me a slight hangover). I reasoned that I felt well because I had eaten some protein with the sugary items. It then occurred to me that, if I ate some solid protein, I could probably have a couple of beers and not feel hung-over. Furthermore, I thought, I might not even be an alcoholic; my problems with alcohol could be purely the result of a sugar imbalance. My mind then snapped back to its normal state.
