Cold turkey

I had received an appointment to teach at a very prestigious boarding school in the Midwest. I was assigned to teach literature, oral and written critique, competitive public speaking and competitive debate. My wife and infant daughter accompanied me, and we were ready to take on the world! I fantasized about being appointed headmaster of the school, and there appeared to be no obstacle big enough or complex enough to stop me from pursuing that goal.
