Laughing in the face of death

A 70-year-old accepts her health problems as part of the plan

When I got to Alcoholics Anonymous, alcohol had removed my religion, along with three husbands. I had never known financial stability. The only thing I had faith in was my own endeavors and my friend alcohol. However, that friend had started failing me too. Back when I was 23 years old, my husband deserted me and three small children (ages 2, 3, and 4). I drank a lot that year. If I had heard of AA at that time, I might have come in then, for I truly hit a bottom. But I was to go on for another 17 years of misery. I felt sorry for myself and for my children. I blamed my ex-husband, his parents, my parents, my church and society for my woes. Alcohol was not my problem; it was my solution. I left my church, but raised my children in another.
