MY TURNING POINT

Declaring his alcoholism at a meeting, a solitary, blackout drinker begins a new life

It started when I was a toddler. My parents were entertaining friends on the veranda before dinner. Everyone set their cocktails down and went inside to dine. When they returned, all the glasses were empty. I was tottering zigzag across the veranda and toppled into the flowerbed. My parents laughed whenever they retold the incident countless times--funny for them, but a sad omen for me. I was off to an early start.
