Sunrise After Sandy

An annual AA breakfast event provides a safe harbor for a devastated New York town

In October 2004, I walked into my first meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous, right out of a treatment center. The fear of making that first entrance was quickly dispelled by having someone I knew—the man who I had asked in rehab to sponsor me—wave me over to a seat next to him. I’ve often wondered if I could have made it into that room if that man had not been there. So I continued to go to meetings, and when spring came, I found a home group on Long Island at the Jones Beach
Sunrise Group.
