Getting the Boot

How self-will run riot gave her a swift kick in the pants

I acquired my first sponsor after hearing her lead at a meeting. She mentioned relationships in recovery, which was all I was really interested in at that time. I would scan the room for the cutest man and go after him. Relationships were a great distraction from learning a new way of life. I didn’t have the ability to fully listen and learn during my first white-knuckle attempt at staying sober. I couldn’t hear her warning of the dangers of getting involved with another recovering alcoholic. She had met her husband in the rooms of AA, and her marriage to him was a success. That was all I needed to hear. I had no idea that relationships required work and love! I just wanted one. I wanted someone to fill the emptiness in my life.
