I bounced around treatment facilities and mental hospitals for seven years, until one day some AAs brought a meeting into a detox in Plano, Texas, and I finally heard the message. After I got a year sober, I knew what I had to do. I joined that group of dedicated AAs and started helping out. I knew I had found my calling! But soon I became a little disappointed. It seemed like none of the patients were interested in receiving the message. I even gave them my personal phone number if they asked. Within a few months, I went from being completely gung-ho to wondering if I was wasting my time.
