Suffering from alcohol-induced dementia, he took the Third Step
About a year ago, I made a notation of my upcoming birthday on the kitchen calendar—I'd be turning 68 on May 5. Only a few days earlier, I would have been unable to perform such a simple task. I had been diagnosed with dementia and was in an assisted care residence for people with the same condition, or the more advanced Alzheimer's disease. Their cases were due to natural causes; mine was caused by alcoholism.
