I got sober in 1988, in Atlanta, Georgia. It was a frightening and disconcerting time for me. Back then and in that place, it seemed to me that fundamentalist Christians dominated meetings. And I was told, regularly, that if I didn't come to believe in God that my sobriety would be short-lived.
