A newly sober wife escapes into the mountains to hike and fish—but that’s not all she does

I was a late bloomer as far as drinking to excess was concerned. Prior to that I was an equal opportunity addict, moving through the whole spectrum of mind-altering options, from food to prescription amphetamines, to dabbling with the psychedelic drugs prevalent during my hippie years. I smoked pot (lots of it), interspersed with occasional bouts of drinking, while I simultaneously moved into and out of multiple marriages and relationships. I was addicted to the adrenaline rush of new love, but incapable of sustaining any kind of stable relationship. I was a mess. The only periods of time that I spent absolutely clean and sober were during pregnancy and early motherhood.
